Tartarus: Wrath of the Titans
On the fifth day in the mountains, the men finished their food reserves. We waiting in the narrow pass for reinforcements, though even the General seemed doubtful. As the night fell, Kyros refused to allow a campfire for fear of discovery. The night was long and cold.
Suddenly we heard the sound of a lone horse approaching in the darkness. Others followed. We stood, weary as we were, and seized our weapons. None were prepared for what we saw. The moon showed four horse legs, but atop was the torso and head of a man. The creature had a thick bow strapped across its chest, though it was not aggressive. Four more of the beasts followed. They trod to General Kyros, as though sensing his leadership. The first of them introduced itself as Equis Aithon. They were Centaurs. By the will of Artemis they had come to guide us down from the mountain. — Erasmos of Sparta
The thunder of hooves echoes through a dense forest. Soon arrows sing from the underbrush, each finding their mark with deadly precision. Soon a band of Centaurs step out – half beast and half man. They are proud, noble and fiercely defensive of their homelands.
OUT OF THE WOODS
Centaurs were created by the goddess Artemis to defend the woodland realms. They embody aspects of the agile steed with the cunning human. Despite common depiction, they are not all part-horse. Half are deer. Their differences are evident in multiple ways. Equis have horse bodies, darker skin and long hair. Cervus, the deer, often have short hair and antlers or horns growing from their heads. In either variety, Centaurs stand over 6 feet tall and have muscular builds.
Equis and Cervus tend to have opposing personality traits as well. Cervus are timid and flighty, though much more likely to have peaceful relations with outsiders. Equis are stoic and quite often aggressive, as likely to shoot an arrow at an intruder as they are to greet them.
A SINGLE FOCUS
Centaurs are born and raised into a specific purpose, chosen by their clan elders. They are instilled with unshakeable dedication to this purpose, and any who question their path are reprimanded severely. For the most part, Centaurs zealously accept their fate. Whether hunters, druids, healers or even emissaries, Centaurs will allow nothing to get in their way.
Though many disagree, Centaurs see humans as just another animal. They hold no particular animosity toward people, but respond swiftly to encroachment as they would to wolves. Many believe humanity can be taught to appreciate nature, and willingly offer to teach them. Others, often younger warriors, have no such faith in the militant Humans.
ONE WITH NATURE
Centaurs live amongst trees and mountains, and do not build homes or settlements of any kind. They are accustomed to sleeping under the stars, be it in the rain or foul winds. Those who do venture into human lands often find night accommodations and buildings in general troublesome. Often they prefer to rest in stables or wait outside while their bipedal allies go indoors.
While Centaurs rarely leave their sanctuaries, those that do almost always have a specific mission. Some may be repaying a life debt to a stranger. Others may have been sent on an assignment by an elder. Due to this singular focus, Centaurs often seem serious or impersonal to outsiders.
Because Centaurs speak as Hellenes do, their names often sound rather similar. Centaurs have a single name, preceded by either Equis or Cervus as their subrace dictates.
