Tartarus: Wrath of the Titans
Water seeped in through the cracks and seams of the corridor. Rats scurried in the darkness and the stench of untold centuries filled the ancient ruins. Soon the darkness was broken by flickering flames, casting shadows which grew larger as they approached. Silence gave way to a heavy grunt and the loud stomping of metal on stone. Finally the monster of the deep rounded the corner. The hulking man stood a half-body above the tallest soldier. Its eyes shone like fire, and the stony skin of its dark fist creaked as they clenched. Arrows would not pierce the armored flesh, and none before it knew the ways of magic. The spawn of the Titans would know victory that day. — Aderbaal, Phoenician Scribe
To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the Titanblooded. And to twist the knife, Titanbloods know that this is because of the failure of humankind to keep monsters and Titans at bay, beings which have in the decades since their escape from Tartarus spawned a tainted generation. Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient corruption, for which they and their children and their children’s children will always be held accountable.
Titanblooded are the offspring of monsters and men, resembling a frightening combination of the two. Some appear completely bestial, with the heads of animals, flaming limbs or bodies covered in fur. Others have more subtle signs of their ancestry, such as elongated teeth, pointed ears and putrid-looking flesh. Unlike Godblooded, Titanbloods never truly look human. As a result, most have taken great pains to hide themselves or their appearance – living underground, in ruins or simply covering their faces with masks or helmets. Once of their more notable features is inky black blood, which when spilled reveals their true nature for all to see.
A NEW BREED
Titanblooded are relatively new in their appearance. Though they are not a true race or culture in themselves, the recent escape by the Titans in the past decades has spawned hundreds of the corrupted progeny. The influx has risen so quickly that many communities has begun to panic, tossing anyone who looks deformed or different into the street with the accusation that they may be Titanblooded.
Despite their common monicker, Titanblooded are not all descended from Titans. Some are descended from monsters like the Minotaur and Cyclopes, though they are often considered to be of the same ilk. All subraces of Titanbloods, as a result, tend to find solace with one another. Titanbloods subsist in small minorities found mostly in human cities and towns, often in the roughest quarters of those places, where they grow up to be thugs, mercenaries or crime lords. Sometimes they live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect.
People tend to be suspicious of Titanblooded, assuming that their monstrous heritage has left its mark on their personality and morality, not just their appearance. Shopkeepers keep a close eye on their goods when Titanbloods enter their stores, the town watch might follow a Titanblood around for a while, and demagogues blame Titanbloods for strange happenings. The reality, though, is that a Titanblooded’s lineage doesn’t affect his or her personality to any great degree. Years of dealing with mistrust does leave its mark on most Titanbloods, and they respond to it in different ways. Some choose to live up to the wicked stereotype, but others are virtuous. Most are simply very aware of how people respond to them. After dealing with this mistrust throughout youth, a Titanblood often develops the ability to overcome prejudice through fear or intimidation.
Lacking a homeland – other than the Worldwound – Titanbloods know that they have to make their own way in the world and that they have to be strong to survive. They are not quick to trust anyone who claims to be a friend, but when a Titanblood’s companions demonstrate that they trust him or her, the Titanblood learns to extend the same trust to them. And once a Titanblood gives someone loyalty, he or she is a firm friend or ally for life.
